Petroglyphs of Sears Point, Arizona

Saturday, February 18, 2023

MEETING TIME: Saturday, February 18, 2023, 8:30 a.m. (Arizona time) at the Sears Point petroglyph site, but participants may wish to assemble with the trip leaders at 8:00 a.m. at the Spot Road exit on Interstate 8, approximately 78 miles east of Yuma, Arizona (measured from the state line). The assembly point is at the frontage road on the north side of the freeway, but the official starting point of the field trip is at the site. A download link for the map and directions to the petroglyph site will be provided to participants prior to the trip. Note that you will lose one hour due to the time change entering Arizona.

ELIGIBILITY: SDRAA Members in good standing as of February 15, 2023. This field trip is limited to members ONLY, no guests or additional family members allowed. Pets are not allowed. Your membership status will be checked upon receipt of your registration.

TRIP LIMIT: 15 persons.

TRIP LEADERS are Greg Erickson, Ken Hedges, and Steve Freers.

For Dual Memberships, two persons may register on the same form. All communication for both persons will be sent to the contact e-mail address provided on the form.

REGISTRATION IS BY ONLINE REGISTRATION FORM ONLY. Register and Pay by Credit Card at this link:

2023 SDRAA FIELD TRIP REGISTRATION AND PAYMENT

Reservations are FIRST-COME, FIRST-SERVED. If the trip fills, we will maintain a waiting list for use in the event of cancellations. Participants are required to fill out and sign the online SDRAA Field Trip Registration Form, which includes a standard liability waiver. The registration fee is required to cover costs of liability insurance. In the event of cancellation or if the trip is filled, payment will be refunded to your credit card account.

CANCELLATIONS: If you are registered but find you are unable to attend, please let us know as soon as possible so we may offer your space to another participant.

DETAILS: Field trip participants will visit the main petroglyph locality at Sear Point. Ken Hedges will share his knowledge of the Sears Point petroglyph style. Detailed directions to the site will be provided. Participants will drive to the site on dirt roads; 4-wheel-drive is not necessary, but the roads are sandy in places and high-clearance vehicles are necessary.

WHERE TO STAY: The nearest places to stay are Yuma, in Wellton 30 miles east of Yuma, and in Gila Bend 38 miles beyond Spot Road on Interstate 8. Information on lodging and camping will be included in the field trip information. NOTE: Sears Point is a low desert area. Each participant should bring an adequate water supply, food for lunch, and sun protection for short walks and outdoor discussions. Be aware that there are rattlesnakes in the area. Current long-range forecasts are for mostly sunny weather with daytime temperatures in the mid- to upper-70s, so we should have a pleasant field trip, but be prepared for any type of weather.

NOTE: The trip is subject to cancellation if there is a 50% or greater prediction of rain 2 days before the trip. Registration is via our online registration form, and participants will receive field trip details and notifications via a download link in your confirmation email. In the event of rain cancellation, participants will be notified by email, so check your e-mail frequently before the trip. For questions, you may email trips@sandiegorockart.org
